Sketch-a-Day 119/365: She's Always a Lady

More of a drawing than a sketch but in the same amount of time. I may be getting faster, or I was just really into the subject matter. Monday's sketch/drawing (scrawing? dretch?) is of Lady Mandarin armor Psylocke. The X-men's own resident psionic Japanese-by-way-of-Britain ninja warrior. Psylocke was always a favorite of mine when I first got into comics though I never read any back history on her beyond her Lady Mandarin era. Mainly because I was never into the Excalibur comic or Captain Britain. If so I probably would have known she was really a blonde and just dyed her hair that awesome purple rather than believing all this time it was a mutant trait. Bummer.

Monday

Sketch-a-Day 118/365: Snack Time!

Bringing Big and Powerful week to a close we have a guy that meets both terms quite literally. He's BIG...like really really cosmic sized big and POWERFUL...planets are a part of his regular diet. Of course I'm talking about Galactus the Devourer of Worlds.

Sketch date: 4/28/13

Sunday

Sketch-a-Day 117/365: Poozers

It takes a Big and Powerful ring bearer to train the new Lanterns how to use their powers. Today's sketch is of the Green Lantern Corps Kilowog

Sketch date: 4/27/13

Saturday

Sketch-a-Day 116/365: Brother Red

Friday's Big and Powerful sketch is of none other than that big lovable demon lug Hellboy! Enjoy!

Friday

Sketch-a-Day 115/365: Every Super Team Has One

Guido Carosella... otherwise known as "Strong Guy" from the government-sponsored incarnation of X-Factor. When you're talking big and powerful, you have to include a guy that absorbs kinetic energy and re-channels it into his own strength to make himself "bigger, stronger, and while it may be hard to believe, better looking!" The dis-proportioned anatomy actually makes this guy fun to draw too.

Sketch-a-Day 20-XIII Sketches Now Available to Own

Are you a fan of comic art? Do you like owning original art? Do you collect art and sketches from small name artists so that one day you can jump up and say "HA! I've been a fan of that guy/girl since they were a nobody!" and rub the fact in the noses of all your comic snob friends?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions than you've come to the right place because I: Timothy Gula (not to be confused with Tim Gula), aka Zingula, aka Gula v2.0, aka Gulapocalypse; have got just what you're looking for! I started my Sketch-a-Day 20-XIII Challenge to kick my butt in gear and get back on track with my dreams and goals but after 115 days I decided...why should I be the only one to benefit from this? You the fan of all things comic; big and small, known and obscure, good and bad should be able to partake of the plentiful bounty of my labor as well. As such, I've decided to open my 20-XIII sketches up to the general public for purchase of the ORIGINAL sketch. Who knows...it just may put your grand-kids through college some day.

Starting with Sketch 14 all sketches are on 9 in x 12 in Strathmore 400 Series paper and are dated, numbered, and treated with a clear gloss fixative to preserve the pencil and prevent against smudging. Heck I'll even sign it for ya! Sketches 1-13 measure 5.5 in x 8.5 in and are the same on all other specs.

Sketches 14 and up are priced at $30US plus shipping and I will ship internationally ! International mail is restricted in accordance to your local rules and regulations for mail and I am not responsible for loss or damage from transit or customs examination/confiscation. Sketches 1-13 are priced at $20 US. Also, the shipping charge is per order, not per sketch. If you purchase more than one at a time you save on shipping!

To purchase, check the availability of the sketch(es) you're interested in owning and send an e-mail to me at chaosarray@gmail.com detailing what you'd like to purchase along with your mailing address (to calculate shipping cost). Paypal is my preferred payment method though other payment options are negotiable.

Remember, this is purchasing the ORIGINAL art. Not a print or digital copy. The bona fide paper and pencil ORIGINAL sketch complete with unfinished/unused sketch lines, hand smudges, and eraser marks!  There may even be a chance of some dog-earing of the corners and the smaller sketches will have a small amount of tape along two parallel sides as they are currently affixed in pairs into a larger format portfolio. WooHoo! Genuine stuff here folks! This is how REAL art is made!

Thank you for having such a fantastic interest in my art and owning a little piece of my history as an artist.

Thursday

Sketch-a-Day 114/365: The Juice Is Loose

Wednesday's Big and Powerful sketch is of DC's poster child for steroid use, Bane! Might be time to get off the gas there buddy.

Sketch date: 4/24/13

Wednesday

Sketch-a-Day 113/365: Bingo, Bango, Bongo

You just can't have a Big and Powerful Week without Marvel's Juggernaut! After all, he's the Juggernaut b!tch...didn't you know?

Sketch date: 4/23/13

Tuesday

Sketch-a-Day 112/365: Big and Powerful

Ever notice how a Monday sketch just seems kind of...unplanned and either sticks out as its own thing from the rest of the week or sets the theme for the week? This is one of those sketches. No ideas, no plan. just started sketching. Not even sure who it is, kind of reminded me a bit of Apocalypse, but only a bit. Oh well, he's big, he's powerful, and there's nothing you can do about it! Who does he look like to you?

Sketch date: 4/22/13

Monday

Sketch-a-Day 111/365: Feeling Lucky?

Rounding out the recent Marvel sketches we have the lady that things just always seem to fall into place with.  X-Forces very own Domino. Thanks for the suggestion Aidy!

Sunday

Sketch-a-Day 110/365: Just Hangin' Around

Just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. I have to admit, I'm not a fan of drawing Spidey (put the torches and pitchforks away). I don't know why exactly, the dynamic availability of the contortionist style poses should allow a lot more freedom, but for some reason I find drawing him rather frustrating at times. Oh well, hope you enjoy today's sketch of Spider-Man!

Saturday

Sketch-a-Day 109/365: So Says DOOM!

"Rivals... No one rivals Doom! NO ONE! Doom is supreme! There is no power on earth, no intellect in all creation to equal Mine!" -- Victor Von Doom

After all the times his plans have been foiled by the accursed Richards, Victor is reduced to the lowest form of retort...Doom Style. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Sketch date: 4/19/13

Thursday

Sketch-a-Day 107/365: Jersey Hulk

Hulk fist pum...er...Hulk mean...SMAAAAASH!!!

...does anything else really need to be said about this one?

Wednesday

Sketch-a-Day 106/365: The Ubiquitous Wolverine

It’s become such a running joke that it should have its own rule established (if it hasn't already) much like Rule 63. Somewhere there must be an unofficial universal requirement for superhero comic book artists to draw Wolverine as part of their official art gallery and during any sketch projects like this sketch-a-day challenge of mine. In fact, if you are indeed a comic artist, amateur or professional, with any interest what-so-ever in drawing the superhero genre and you HAVEN’T ever drawn Wolverine, please step forward.

Anyone?...

Anyone?...

Well, while it’s far from being my first ever drawing of the ol’ Canuck, it did take me 106 days to finally succumb to sketching him for my Sketch-A-Day 20-XIII Challenge. It honestly was a struggle to make it this far and not include him.

Tuesday

Sketch-a-Day 105/365: Uninspirational Inspiration

Something a little different for today. Tried a very loose and fast style for this one after feeling uninspired even after browsing through some idea generators.

Monday

Sketch-a-Day 104/365: Doctor Ultra's Ultrites

If you think what you have to wear to work is bad, then you've never worked for Doctor Ultra in his younger start-up years before he had the disposable capital that he has today to frivolously invest in technology research and development...and image consultants. Back then the good doctor wanted there to be no mistaking his loyal masses of "Ultrites" for anyone else's run-of-the-mill hired thug. Moral among the Ultrites suffered through the 90's as a result with casualty numbers reaching record highs. Many blame the uniform, more specifically the shame in wearing it, however a search for any Ultrites from the era of its use had no surviving results.

In a recent interview when Doctor Ultra was questioned on the original uniforms of the Ultrites, he said;
"It wasn't an ego thing. Not at all. It was just...poor judgement and an amateurish over saturation of branding."

Sunday

Sketch-a-Day 103/365: Say Hello to My Little Friend!

For those of us that grew up on comics in the 90's there's a couple things we learned: drawing a gun requires ZERO working knowledge of firearms, bigger is always better, and ammunition never ever runs out so two spare mags is more than enough to carry. Tonight we have a Doctor Ultra guard sporting a stylish "Cable Gun" with a simplified armor design. Who needs head to toe body armor when you've got a gun like this? It's not like anyone ever aims for your legs or crotch. Just look at a paper target, its all chest and head.

Sketch date: 4/13/13

Saturday

Sketch-a-Day 102/365: Lock and Load

The personal assistants of Doctor Ultra are starting to come together. I just can't seem to get away from the detailed body armor with these guys. I'd really like to find a way to simplify the whole look without just slapping on a jumpsuit.

Sketch date: 4/12/13

Friday

Sketch-a-Day 101/365: Must be Worn at All Times

Helmets! Helmets for everyone!!! Today's sketch is a preliminary design of Doctor Ultra's guard units. I'm not quite sure if I nailed it or if I still have tweaking to do...kind of odd to be unsure.

Sketch date: 4/11/13

Thursday

Sketch-a-Day 100/365: Success of Failure

Today I try not to see my sketch as a failure of what I want the guards to look like. Instead I shall look at it as an example of what I DON'T want the guards to look like. Success is just a matter of perspective.

Sketch date: 4/10/13

Wednesday

Sketch-a-Day 99/365: Personal Assistants

Another guard design for Doctor Ultra's army of personal assistants. I went a bit more realistic with the body armor, referencing quite a bit of modern body armor both military and recreational.

Sketch date: 4/9/13

Tuesday

Sketch-a-Day 98/365: GUAAAARDS!

This week I'll be moving from the titular Azure Fox, to some designs of Doctor Ultra's henchme...uh, personal assistants. Of which he has many. You could call it an army of personal assistants. I want to keep these guys simple (since there are a LOT of them) but still somewhat awesome. Let the designs commence!!

Sketch date: 4/8/13

Monday

Sketch-a-Day 97/365: Kickin' it Azure Style

Skilled, quick, and efficient. Azure takes her job very serious. Do you think she follows through with a blade after a swift kick to the head?

Sketch date: 4/7/13

Sunday

Sketch-a-Day 96/365: The Last Thing You See

The real reason for the fox head cleavage cutout? According to Azure it's to give the bad guys a more pleasing final thought before they die. Ya know, maybe they won't mind that pain from a sword to their chest so much when they are seeing hers...hey, it could be legit!

Actually I just felt like working on perspective a little...and bewbs.

Sketch-a-Day 95/365: Kid Friendly Azure

When this week started and I was trying to figure out what to sketch my daughter suggested I start sketching Azure Fox. Jokingly I told her no and that she should sketch her for me. After some debate about neither of us knowing what she looked like she sat down and sketched out what she thought the character should be. Friday night I decided to finally use her design idea for a more "kid friendly" tech ninja version of Azure. I only made a few modifications; fox symbol on the chest plate, belt emblem, and I switched arms for the mini-spear launching gauntlet thing. When I can get my daughter's sketch scanned I'll make another post featuring both images but for now, please enjoy Tech-Ninja Azure designed by H. Gula, sketched by me.

Sketch date: 04/05/13

Friday

Sketch-a-Day 94/365: Is This a Joke?

Azure doesn't seem too happy with this idea! Admittedly the original idea for her was to be a barely dressed sexual themed "T n A" heroine. While that concept has since changed a bit, I couldn't resist making a sketch of how she was originally intended. Still, wouldn't mind seeing someone cosplay this someday :-P

Sketch date: 04/04/13

Thursday

Sketch-a-Day 93/365: It's Azure Fox! Huzzah!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I think we have an official working design for Azure Fox finally. Unless I come up with something totally revolutionary there should only be some slight variances and tweaking from here on out.

Sketch date: 4/3/13

Tuesday

Sketch-a-Day 92/365: Azure Fox (aka: Badass Ninja Chick)

Day two of the Azure Fox design process gives us a bit of a different outfit, keeping the fox head cleavage cut-out, dropping the helmet, and toying with a bit of a kunoichi vibe. Enjoy!

Sketch date: 4/2/13

Monday

Sketch-a-Day 91/365: Return of Azure

Following up on the Doctor Ultra design week I figured I might as well get some work in on the titular hero of the story, Azure Fox, since we haven't seen her since way back on sketch six. I'll be exploring several variations to her design; some subtle tweaks and other extreme changes to the character. Oh and just to squash any gripes up front, yes they're fake and it's intentional :-P All other comments and critiques are more than welcome so please, let's hear some feedback!

Sketch date: 4/1/13

Sketch-a-Day 90/365: Doctor Ultra Mannequin

Would you look at that? We've reached the 90 day mark of the Sketch-a-Day 20-XIII Challenge! Hard to believe the first quarter has gone by so quickly. Today's sketch is keeping with the Doctor Ultra design work focusing on the outfit itself. I was really happy with the long lab coat and shoulder pad from the first two designs and really just did a little tweaking and refining with the style of coat to be used. I think this will indeed be the official outfit of the nefarious Doctor Ultra.
