Sketch-A-Day 238/365: Hangin' Around

Another sketch inspired by the recent injury to my spine. I know this is something that's been done multiple times by many other artists and is by no means an original composition, but it sums up how I've been feeling.

Sketch-A-Day 237/365: Totem Head: Five

The fifth and final totem entry, because something with wings is pretty much a staple among totem poles, is the mighty dragon totem!

Sketch-A-Day 236/365: Totem Head: Four

The fourth totem sketch. I'm not sure what it is other than a skull of some sort, but it looks cool.

Sketch-A-Day 235/365: Totem Head: Three

The third sketch of the totem series is a hellhound type creature.

Sketch-A-Day 234/365: Totem Head: Two

The second head for the future totem pole. Is it a dog? Is it a pig? I really don't know, but I like it!

Sketch-A-Day 233/365: Totem Head: One

Initially this started off as another What the heck am I going to draw tonight sketch with random lines on a basic head structure. When all was said and done my girlfriend noted that it looked like something you'd find on a totem pole...in a weird and twisted alien kind of way. As a result, I have decided to continue the totem head idea for four more sketches after this and will at some point later ink and digitally construct the totem pole.

Sketch-A-Day 232/365: Caped Samurai

Samurai warrior with a cape. In retrospect it could probably pass as a samurai Batman. Totally was not my intent while sketching though. Enjoy!

Sketch-A-Day 231/365: Minitaur

First the Minotaur, now the Minitaur!

The fearsome part man part bull creature of Greek Mythology, the Minotaur.

Sketch-A-Day 229/365: Plague Doctor

I constantly see various images of Plague Doctors around the old internets; cosplay, modeling, drawings, etc. I've taken a fancy to the image and just had to sketch one out of my own. Plague Doctors were awesome.

Sketch-A-Day 228/365: Pain

On Friday I woke up to an intense pain in my back. Many many years ago I injured it working on a loading dock and from time to time, sometimes for no apparent reason, the old herniated discs decide to flare up and not work. The pain created from this is near crippling and I'm too stubborn to have surgery. On the plus side it gave me the opportunity to channel the raw feelings I was experiencing into my sketch.

Sketch-A-Day 227/365: You're Not Fooling Anyone

My generic sketch hero needed a generic sketch sidekick so here we have Sidekick (hence the "S") in quite the typical domino mask...seriously, who came up with this style of mask to hide a person's identity? It doesn't. At all. You're not fooling anyone with that crap! Get a REAL mask ya bum!

Sketch-A-Day 226/365: Drawing a Blank

Common problem for me...all day long ideas are surging through my head, then when I pick up the pencil to sit down and draw...my thoughts go completely blank.

Sketch-A-Day 225/365: Get in My Belly!

I don't have much to say about this one, not that much needs to be said, but I was having a few intestinal disruptions of high intensity discomfort...and this is the result. Enjoy the Belly Monster!

Sketch-A-Day 224/365: I'm Getting Too Old For This

"I tell ya, I'm getting too old for this crap." Yup, even superheroes have those moments when they just cant help but realize time is catching up to them. I guess he should have gotten himself a sidekick at some point to pass the torch.

Sketch-A-Day 223/365: Kali

The six armed Goddess of Time and Change, Kali. Though I guess most comic geeks would be quick to yell out Spiral instead. :P

Sketch-A-Day 222/365: Local Anesthetic

This is going to hurt you more than it hurts me. Would you like a little something before the probing begins?

Aliens...they're all heart.

Sketch-A-Day 221/365: Battle Scarred Mage

A common misconception in the portrayal of wielders of the dark arts is that the individuals are frail only pursuing the crafts to compensate for their shortcomings in physical attributes and power. War Mages would argue this point vehemently with an arcane blast to your face after removing their boot from the cavernous depths of your backside.

Saturday

Sketch-A-Day 220/365: Marked Mystic

Sketch of a Mystic (mage) and his magical markings holding his staff of power.

Sketch date: 08/08/13

Sketch-A-Day 219/365: Bubble Construction

Experimented with something different for this one. I've seen a lot of artists out there using the bubble construction method of their figures with fairly interesting results so I thought I'd give it a go. Decided I'm not a fan of it. I had flashback moments to when I first started drawing figures following the How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way methods.

Sketch-A-Day 218/365: Bad Feelings

Sometimes it's better not to look behind you. Follow your gut, but don't ever look back.

Sketch date: 08/06/13

Sketch-A-Day 217/365: Wonderment of Curiosity

As a creative type, one should never lose their ability to see the world with the same wonder and curiosity as a child; regardless of age.

Sketch date: 08/05/13

Sketch-A-Day 216/365: Final Fairy

The final fairy of the sketch series brings beauty, grace, and elegance.

Sketch date: 08/04/13

Tuesday

Sketch-A-Day 215/365: Fairy Au Naturel

The freedom of no restrictions. It's not for everyone and for others its constantly yearned for...

...I told my girlfriend I drew her as a fairy. :P

Sketch date: 08/03/13

Monday

Sketch-A-Day 214/365: Relaxed Wings

I wish I had something to say about this one, but I don't. It's a fairy to keep with the theme of the week. Hope you like it!

Sketch date: 08/02/13

Sketch-A-Day 213/365: Graceful Wings

Another fairy with more butterfly like wings. I never understood people putting elaborate gowns on fairies. You'd think they would have to wear backless clothing when they wear clothing at all; especially when they have large elaborate wings...and no "magic" is not an acceptable explanation to how it's done.

Sketch date: 08/01/13

Sketch-A-Day 212/365: Twisted Fairy

Sometimes fairies become corrupted and twisted, becoming a dark shadow of the good spirited creature it was.

Sketch date: 07/31/13

Sketch-A-Day 211/365: Truth Is...

Truth is...fairies really just want to eat you.

Sketch date: 07/30/13

Sketch-A-Day 210/365: Leaf Clad Fairy

After two weeks of lizard men, I decided to move on to fairies.

Sketch date: 07/29/13

Sketch-A-Day 209/365: Knuckle Dragger

The final lizard man for a while. After nearly two weeks I think it's time for a change for the next sketch. This one I went way primitive in construction. A primate in lizard form.

Sketch date: 07/28/13

Sketch-A-Day 208/365: Getting a Head, Again

I do believe my lizard men may end up being as varied and unique as the human counterparts in the story.

Sketch date: 07/27/13

Sketch-A-Day 207/365: Lizard Hands

I like the iguana like fingers, but there's something to be said for the velociraptor digit. I had an idea many many moons ago that I may have to dig up to combine with this. I just don't think one finger can support efficient use of a talon like that.

Sketch date: 07/26/13

Sketch-A-Day 206/365: What Long Fingers You Have

A bit more trim than the previous one. Went with longer iguana like fingers too. Also made him a little less upright with limbs to show he can/does still move quite efficiently on all fours.

Sketch date: 07/25/13

Sketch-A-Day 205/365: More Than Just a Head

Started working on more of the lizard man. After all, I don't plan on having just a bunch of disembodied floating heads hovering around!

Sketch date: 07/24/13

Friday

Sketch-A-Day 204/365: Well Hello...

I think we have another strong contender here for sketch 199 folks. Kind of gator like with a primitive flair yet still a sentient look with an almost human persona hinted at. I like this.

Sketch date: 07/23/13

Sketch-A-Day 203/365: Lizard Man Take 6

This guy came out a little too snake like for my taste though the design is pretty simple. The profile isn't bad but the front view is too wide.

Sketch date: 07/22/13

Sketch-A-Day 202/365: Sci-fi Lizard Man

I love this rendition of a lizard man but it seems very sci-fi to me. Sort of like what the aliens from V should have looked like beneath their human skin. It's not right for my story's world but it's a keeper for future reference.

Sketch date: 07/21/13

Sketch-a-Day 201/365: Lizard Man Fail

The interesting thing to me about maintaining a sketch blog is that you get to see my best right along with my worst. Sure I can always scrap a sketch and start over if it's truly horrendous (and believe me, I have done just that many many times) but some days the best you can do is sub-par to what you're capable of. This lizard man isn't on that end of the scale, but it's not the lizard man I'm looking for.

Sketch date: 07/20/13

Sketch-A-Day 200/365: Lizard Man Take 3

Yes, there will be quite a few lizard man designs coming here. This one I like, but I'm not crazy about it. Maybe if Heritage was set in the far future and the lizard men were an advanced technological capable species THEN this might be a good design for them...but my lizard men are a bit more primitive.

Sketch date: 07/19/13

Sketch-A-Day 199/365: Lizard Man Take 2

My second attempt at getting a feel for lizard men turned out a bit more brutish. I like the flattened face of this one bringing out a bit more of the man aspect.

Sketch date: 07/18/13

Sketch-A-Day 198/365: Lizard Man

My first take on a lizard man. Since they are fairly prominent species in the beginning of Heritage I figured i should figure out what my lizard men look like. There's a long way to go still.

Sketch date: 07/17/13

Sketch-A-Day 197/365: Beware of Guard Orc

Maybe you didn't see the clearly posted one inch by one inch warning etched into the base of the door to the Wizard's Keep...yeah well, you were warned.

Sketch date: 07/16/13

Sketch-A-Day 196/365: Don't Feed Them

Remember; Do NOT under any circumstances ever feed the trolls. This rule applies to all trolls both real and imaginary.
